Book List 2009
9. Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (popularly but incorrectly known as Fanny Hill) by John Cleland.
I felt ashamed that I've gotten this many years into studying written pornography but hadn't read the sort-of grandfather of the genre, so I fixed that. Now I'm reading two books about the same nebulous cloud of dissertation research, but growing steadily closer to a topic. Thank goodness. Maybe by next week I'll have a loose and trembling paragraph to share. I can only vaguely gesture and look out the window at this point.
Experiments in manual mode on my camera continue. Cabot and a bird and the window of my office gave me some decent time and fodder this week.
Not perfect, but a big improvement from his usual "I'm going to hide my eyes and walk towards the camera every time I see it" routine. Good job distracting bird outside the window.
Lunch was excellent improved curry at around 3:30, no idea what dinner will bring, but after that I'll actually be headed out for the goth club for the first time in forever. I'm looking forward to it, and I really want to come up with a decently interesting outfit and make myself look purdy. I still miss getting ready for goth fun with other people (Sarah, Angela, Anne, Leslie and Hanneke come to mind immediately but I've shared this ritual with many friends) and preparing ourselves with dancey dancey music ahead of time and making ourselves late with silly photo taking. It is so different here, but I still need a compatriot or five for the never-ending questions like, "Is this geek chic or frumpy? Does this skirt cover a reasonable portion of thigh? Will I fall down in these shoes? Do I look like a robot maid, or too much like Xena?". I guess I will never know if I have accidently transformed myself into a knock off warrior princess on club nights, but maybe Alex would save me from such a fate. I wouldn't really know.
(I really want to take some inspiration from the quasi-Asian/1940s-esque looks in the spring 2009 Armani Prive collection, but my clothing simply doesn't have the pieces to support my imagination on that one.
