need a weekend to recover from my weekend

I am so exhausted :( I tried to go to bed early last night but the sleep deficit from Saturday's trip to NYC is too great to overcome. But, all in all, I had a great weekend; my only complaint is it being much too short. Friday night Wade and I went on a little date and Christmas shopping for the boys. We came home and put the kids in bed, then had ice cream and caught up on a bit of the TV we recorded through the week (how romantic!) I tried to go to sleep early that night because I had to get up at 4 AM to leave for New York.

Michelle picked me up at 4:35 or so...I won't say bright and early because, although it WAS early, it was anything but bright. It was dark and rainy :( We braved the pouring rain all the way down Broadway, around Times Square and then down 5th Avenue until finally it stopped around lunch time. Later, in Central Park, the sun even peeped out to welcome us to the city.

What a great place New York is! So much to see and do! And I felt like I only got to do a minute fraction of the awesome stuff. I just kept thinking how much Wade would love watching all the people and scoping out the huge buildings. I have to get him there soon :) Michelle and I had a fun time together. We helped each other navigate the city...She had done some research ahead of time (what a good librarian!) so she got us around in the morning. But later, in Central Park when she became disoriented, I was able to grasp the little sense of direction I have to see us safely back to the city in the vicinity of the gallery we were to visit that afternoon. We were both exhausted at the end, but there was no awkwardness at just tuning each other out and relaxing on the bus ride home. She is a good traveling companion :)

The Michelangelo exhibit was small, but extraordinary, and it was wonderful to have the museum director be our guide. Looking at the map of Renaissance-era Florence, all of my sister's adventures in the city when she studied there in college came back to me. How I would love to go there, and really all over Europe, someday. I have to get Wade over this fear of flying :P Although, maybe he is slowly overcoming it... Yesterday in church we learned our senior pastor is on a mission trip to India, and Wade commented that he wouldn't want to go to India, but he could see going on a mission trip to maybe South America. Someday we will feel very smart for having our children so young because we will be free to travel and explore and actually have the money to do it (unlike if we'd done that stuff BEFORE having kids!)

The boys adored my pictures and can't wait to go to NYC. I think maybe we need to plan a NYC adventure for spring or early summer. It will be a nice contrast to our trip out west :)
