I always have the same thought whenever I am in a big group of librarians, which is, "Damn, I don't look half bad!" Seriously. It's a big ego boost to be juxtapositioned alongside older, dowdier women, the majority of whom are viable candidates for the show "What Not To Wear." My officemate and I also made note of the ubiquitous dorky male librarian look, which features a disproportionate number of ponytails than is found in the general male population.
This experience is always nice, especially considering that my normal work day is spent among young, cute college kids, but I am always left wondering where the iconic image of the sexy librarian came from when I observe these real life models. I guess that is why I continue to be surprised when I tell new acquaintances that I'm a librarian and I get a nudge and a wink. Surely they don't think I'm representative of the stereotypical librarian?
However, it was good to see that Maryland Librarians are not a more attractive group than Indiana Librarians or even the national crowds I have seen at ALA.
