the things she’ll never know
Ryan watched from his seat as the beautiful blushing bride walked down the aisle. He’d watched her from afar for four years now, watched her grow, watched her change from the first person he met. Then she was rude and perhaps a bit obnoxious but beautiful, she was beautiful and beneath all the hostility she gave out, he could tell that she was honest and kind and that she cared deeply for the people she loved. She showed that when they nearly lost Marissa the first time. He’d only known her a few months but it changed his opinion of her forever.
He didn’t like the way Seth treated her to begin with, messing her around, unable to choose her over Anna. Was it difficult? Anna was a nice girl and became a good friend before she left but there was just no comparison between her and Summer. It would always be Summer, even for him.
Everyone was looking at her as she walked closer to her future but no one was looking at her the way Ryan was looking at her. Everyone was looking with adoration and happiness, Ryan only showed sadness yet pride, pride that she had managed to find someone who made her happy and how radiant she looked.
Summer glanced his way when she made it to him and gave him a little smile, he looked sad and she supposed this was due to the lack of Marissa’s presence, they spoke of her often with one another when no one was around, she supposed this would be something they would always do. She hoped.
A part of her would always feel something for Ryan. Her Chino. Even today she called him his nickname, he didn’t particularly like it, she could tell but he still chuckled and gave her a grin whenever she muttered the word and she knew it was just for her.
She took Seth’s hand as she made it to the top of the altar, but she couldn’t help but compare Seth’s soft hands to Ryan’s rough yet somehow soothing hands. He stroked her hair sometimes, usually when they were sitting by Marissa’s graveside.
Seth knew they both visited the grave a lot and most likely assumed they saw one another there but Summer knew he didn’t suspect that they always planned to meet there, unspoken plans. He didn’t know that by the end of the night, both Ryan and Summer would be sitting by Marissa’s grave, that Summer would fall into Ryan’s arms and that he would kiss her head and soothe her hair, his shirt would become damp from her tears and he would wonder…what if Summer was his? Seth would never know and as Ryan watched Summer say her vows, he realised; neither would she.
