[Perched on a swing at the playground, Rapunzel is about as forlorn as a girl can get. She has spent the day trying not to think of her mother.

Inevitably, trying NOT to think of her mother causes Rapunzel to think about her mother. Nearly everything she has done today has brought the woman to the forefront of her thought. It started when she realized her usual pink gown was beginning to be a bit tattered round the hem--stained with the kinds of stains that vigorous laundering doesn't seem to lift.

She wants to pick out a new dress, but she's not sure which one Mother would approve of.

So on the swing she sits, the picture of forlorn maidenness. Beside her, on the ground--almost forgotten--there lies a bulky burlap sack.]
