I had a teacher in college who loved gradient meshes like a lunatic, and that alone granted me the advantage of becoming very familiar with them. :)
But yeah, a lot of designers I have come across find it quite obscure, until they are shown how to use them and more importantly, what they can do! I know because I was one of them once.

Now I'm curious to see what you're working on :D
