I've been having a rough time of things lately.
A couple weeks ago, a girl ran a red light while I was walking the dog and hit Hawkeye. He's fine, but it really shook me up. Last week, Granny died. It was a lovely funeral and it was definitely her time. School has been running me ragged and making me question if I really am any better than my brother. So...yeah, that's not fun. And, of course, money. I lost my job at the bookstore last month, about two days after the book rush. This is after I made a sizable and nonreturnable purchase of a laptop. I've got a new job, tutoring middle schoolers. I'm looking forward to actually working with the kids, but I won't get paid for six weeks. I need to look at unemployment and see if I qualify; food would be nice before April. :-P
SCA's going okay. I just got back from fighter practice; I fought heavy for the first time in forever. That didn't go as well as I had hoped. The only kill I got was after being legged and advanced on, I stabbed Gunnar in the crotch. Fencing is another story entirely. I've been doing really well in that. It's been established that while I'm new to fencing, I do know a good amount of stuff. The more established fencers have sent people my way (people who have been fencing a lot longer than me, actually) to be taught. Normally I will take the big dogs in the fencing pile about half of the time in our bouts, with maybe 7 out of 10 when I'm on my A game, or when someone makes the mistake of handing me a buckler. I've noticed with fencing that I'm good at faking people out, especially if they are holding a buckler. Then it's easier than sin to fake high to make them block across their eyes and stab them somewhere else. I've also noticed that I tend to go for strange angles that, while they do get me kills, do not take advantage of my reach and put me closer to my opponents' swords more than is strictly necessary. I've also got a good inside game and am able to lock up their blade, control it, and get a good stab or cut by utilizing my longass monkey arms to achieve more extreme angles than they can cover.
This weekend is White Hart. My goal is to authorize in fencing and heavy fighting, and make it past the first round in each of the tournaments. We'll see how that goes.
