School started yesterday. The semester looks like it's going to be fun, but busy. More on that story as it develops.
I found out that the Tournament of the White Hart is at the end of February. This is a local SCA event with a heavy tourney attached to it. My plan is to go, get authorized, and get past the first bracket in the tournament. This is going to be difficult since there's not going to be any heavy practices before then, so I won't have a live opponent to work with, an experienced fighter to help serve as a coach, or anything like that. I think it's a perfectly achievable goal, however. I've beaten some SCA fighters when I had less experience in armor than I do now. Plus, if whoever draws me in the first round writes me off as a scrub since I'll be a freshly authorized newb, I'll have that to my advantage. Still, however, I've got a plan to lead to success.
1) Work out daily. I already walk Hawkeye every day. Some pushups and stuff added should help me out and that way I'll have more energy and a better conditioned body when it comes to the tourney.
2) 15 minutes of pell work daily. Without a live opponent, this is going to be my practice time. I know 15 minutes isn't a lot, but if I use my time well, it should have a positive affect. I plan to work on throwing shots with power, combinations, fighting at range, and belly to belly stuff. I talked to Omar today about combinations; I believe that if I pick three and really work on them for these six weeks, then I'll be able to use those as bread and butter shots and make them dangerous.
3) Work on my armor. Right now my gear kind of falls off of me. I talked to Doug and we're going to try to get together sometime before the event to rig my gear properly. Hopefully this will result in me having elbow cops that stay in place on my arm, legs that actually fit my legs, and a decent strap on my helmet. If my body protection gets up to snuff, then it should move with me a lot better during combat and help me out in that fashion.
I'm also planning on making two sets of garb. One set of something sturdy that I can wear with my armor so I can look more period while I fight, and a set of something I can wear when I'm not going to get all sweaty and disgusting. Or at least no more than usual. If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you perform well. I was going to make the stuff anyway, but now I've got a combat related reason. In case it's not manly to sew and wear hose or something. :P
I'm going to go have a conversation with Hawkeye about which side of the bed is his. Again.
