California History Online Exhibits

At the risk of outing myself as hopelessly geeky, I would like to declare that I am Really Excited about having discovered this today.

I limit my websurfing on the clock to sites that could be conceivably be passed of as something I would access in answering a reference question. This translates to a lot of time standing in front of a circulation terminal idly reading reviews at Booklist Online and Amazon.com and occasional attempts at trying to plan dinner using Gale Powersearch to look for recipes (this has not been particularly successful).

This afternoon, hopelessly overstaffed and underpatronized, I was able to page through about half of the exhibit on California's extinct state mascot.

Check it out: illustrations and accounts of bull/bear fights*

Check it out: Really wacky furniture

Check it out: Grizzly Adams as fodder for romance novels

You can't tell me this isn't unbelievably cool.

*Wikipedia tells me that the theory that the bear's downward swipe of the paw and the bull's upward thrust of the horn during these fights is a false etymology for the origins of the market terms, but I still thinks it's a pretty neat explanation.
