So this last week I got a rude email from a woman who attended a rugby game and was offended by our opening chant. In addition to sending it to me she also forwarded it along to the school, the schools woman's center, ASUM, and the school paper. And with modern college students being as nostalgic as they are for the ages of student radicalism naturally everyone seemed eager to latch on to a potential controversy. The whole thing was resolved after a series of correspondences and arguments after which the whole thing was dropped. I ended up writing a counter-letter which I have been told, reflects the fact that I was raised by two lawyers (I know, that's boasting).
Meanwhile, Casey has been reading up on the idea of corporal punishment. There is a clear bent in the articles which he is reading in favor of it and I can't figure out if that is the case because of his pre-existing opinion or because corporal punishment is generally considered unacceptable and he's trying to understand the counter-argument. Either way, he keeps me posted on the key arguments of each article. It's an interesting topic and one that admittedly I am still on the fence on (something that I never thought I would say).
The whole deal got me really interested into disecting arguments, at first because I had to in order to keep the school from shit-canning the rugby team. But after a while just to see how the arguments are structured, and what examples they use to support that argument, and if their characterization of the argument is accurate enough to make the comparison valid. Now I am kind of wishing I had taken rhetoric while in school. I think I would have been good at it.
