I'll be teaching Medical once classes are resumed, and no you don't learn chip removal on from the start. We'll start with the basics and work your way through. [Metal then cuts to video, long enough to hold up his little rat friend and the meticulous splint on the front leg. Otherwise, the little guy seems healthy.]

Let's see...breathing normally, no swollen around the wound, splint is secure and placed, even for a small critter this one was able to put a splint securely.
Just make sure it doesn't try to walk, it will take about 4 weeks to recover.
