I am sewing a Renaissance gown for a co-worker's daughter. She will be in a madrigal choir next school year and each kid is required to provide their own 'noble' garb. I'm excited to take on this project; it's been too long since I did any big-ticket costuming.
The young lady has chosen
this style , view A, in burgundy and rose. In hindsight, I should have just drawn up my own sleeve pattern and saved her mother the six bucks, because our young lady doesn't like the bodice as pictured; she wants one that laces up the sides. I have a couple of different bodice patterns, but none that lace up the sides, and unlike sleeves, bodices aren't something that I feel comfortable trying to draw up and modify all on my own. So I'm making view B of
this bodice. I'll make the over skirt as a separate piece, and tie the sleeves onto the bodice.
And because I have two daughters of my own who have worn pirate garb to the last two or three Renaissance faires we've attended, I've been making plans to sew gowns for them, too. Oldest daughter likes the same bodice pattern as above, only view D with the spiffy ribbon sleeves. She likes the idea of dark green and brown with gold trim. Youngest daughter doesn't get a choice of colors; I've got a huge stash of dark purple velvet (king-size bedspread bought on deep discount years ago that I've been saving). Yes, I know purple is supposed to be reserved for royalty and I don't care. ;)
Today I cut out a mock-up of the bodacious burgundy bodice in unbleached muslin. Wish I could get it sewn up but a weeknight is not the best time to haul out the sewing machine. Ah well, maybe Saturday evening.
