Mary never knew the particulars about how John had met Jim; all she knew was that they'd met in Vietnam. That had always struck her. Neither of them had ever seemed hard enough to have gone through the horrors of a war that no one wanted. Only at night, when she was hushing John back to sleep after a nightmare had awoken him in a tangle of sweat, tears and sheets, did she wonder. She never liked to think they met in danger, she never liked to think of them in danger period, but she somehow knew that they had. The scars on John's shoulders told her as much.

-

When John proposed he and Mary never talked about a wedding. They picked up Julie and Jacob and drove to Blue Earth. Julie was Mary's maid of honor and her uncle walked her down the aisle in lieu of her dead parents. John didn't have a best man. His best man was the one who said he could kiss his bride at the end of the ceremony.

-

Dean's first word was cookie. He was sitting in Jim's lap trying to pull at his collar and all of a sudden he said 'cookie'. John started laughing which caused his tiny son to start laughing which caused Jim to start laughing.

Mary found the three of them on the floor in tears, Dean crawling over them like they were mountains to be conquered.

-

Twelve minutes after John had left Dean in the waiting room and rushed after Mary into the delivery room, Jim sat down next to him. Neither of them said a word, tall and conscious Jim and tiny legging dangling Dean, they merely sat in silence. After nearly eighteen hours of labor, John came out to find his son curled up in his best friend's arms, his small legs dangling across his lap.

-

If it had been up to John, Mary might never have had a gravestone. Giving her a gravestone would have been giving up, and he was never ready to do that. Jacob had paid for it, and died the next week. Julie had finished Jacob's job, and died a month later.

Jim had said the rites. Watched as John cried into a bottle every night. He watched his friend break before his eyes.

Twenty-three years later, Jim died so he wouldn't have to watch his best friend cry for his sons.
