"Hey Dad, just checkin' in."

Dean hung up the phone and laid back on the motel mattress, popping greasy French fries in his mouth as he turned the television on. It was a baseball game, Yankees against the Red Sox. Sweet.

He picked up his phone again halfway through the seventh inning stretch commercial break. Scrolling through the names he stopped in the S's. SAMMICH, the screen said in bold black letters, the California phone number scrolling underneath it in smaller letters. He'd never dialed it, not for two years now. Before that he'd always just punched in the number one. Speed dial and all.

With a half smile he tossed the phone back on the bed. The game was back on.

"Dad, I'm heading to California, I'll meet you there."

Dean hung up the phone and pulled into the gas station, sucking down the remains of a stale coffee that tasted like Sam had made it, over-brewed and half burnt, and dude, he was pretty sure there was cream in it.

He picked up a couple (read: twelve) bags of peanut M&Ms and poured himself a new cup of coffee, before adding a bag of skittles and a box of French fries and dropping it all on the counter.

"On a road trip, sugar?" Dean grinned at the girl behind the counter and nodded as he handed her his, or rather James Hetfield's, credit card.

"Forty at six and can you add a bag of Funnyons," he said by way of answering. If he wasn't on a timeline...

After a few minutes more of compulsory flirting, Dean flashed the girl, Ginni, one last smile before heading back out to the Impala with his bags of breakfast, lunch and dinner. He filled up his baby with premium gasoline and reveled in the sound of his girl roaring back to life as he took off down the road.

"Hey Dad, it's Dean. I'm going to get Sam."

Dean hung up the phone and rolled down the window as the hot air changed to a nice cool breeze coming from the beaches of Sacramento. His Dad hadn't called him in four days and not only was he getting worried, but he was getting pissed. John Winchester knew better.

He stopped at a motel and threw his stuff onto the bed without a glance. He could have just gone straight to Sam's but...

Two years. It had been two years since they'd spoken, a fight about John no less, and it'd been four years since they'd last seen each other on Pastor Jim's front lawn. Sam had looked at him like he was a traitor, but Sam was the one leaving. Sam had left them, him.

He was giving his Dad one more day.
