North Lake
Here are some pics from a visit to North Lake in Golden Gate Park on Sunday.
Autumn has lent these blackberry leaves a ruby glow.
A chestnut bur.
This fallen chestnut leaf catches a ray of warm autumn sun slanting through the forest.
Mallards and coots enjoy North Lake.
Due to ignorant people feeding wildlife, normally-nocturnal raccoons hang around the trail near the lake, hoping their cuteness will get them some human snacks (which is a very bad idea).
North Lake, viewed from the south end.
On the other side of the lake is a clan of about 10 raccoons in the brush along the trail, one of whom surveys the action from up in a tree.
A squirrel pokes around on the ground below the raccoon.
A Steller's jay is not usually seen at this low an elevation, preferring foothill woodlands and mountainous forests instead.
At nearby Lloyd Lake is a small flock of hooded mergansers, whose males seems to be engaging in a courtship display for the smaller female.
Hooded mergansers have very striking coloration. Their crests can be raised and lowered.
