Calero Creek Trail

Calero Creek Trail

On Saturday D. and I took a walk along a shady part of the Calero Creek Trail in San José, and I took a few pics.

Poison oak leaves are beginning to show some autumn color already.

On the side of the trail opposite Calero Creek is a walnut orchard, with some pretty sad-looking trees.

Purple thistle.

The trail and the orchard.

Turkey vultures patrol the thermals rising from the parched, sun-baked ground.

Poison oak berries.

The orchard is full of hayfield tarweed flowers.

California blackberry blossom.

Yellow star thistle.

Star thistle spines are no joke; very ouchy.

Wild lettuce seed head look like a dandelion clock.

A ground squirrel sits on top of a wire tree cage at the edge of the orchard.

An oak gall, created by a wasp laying her egg inside an oak leaf bud.

Horses graze in the shade where the trail doglegs by Santa Teresa Creek.

The trail leaves the shady creek bank for open grasslands, and it is too hot to continue, so we turn back.

A small landing strip in an empty field in the middle of nowhere = an enigma.

Dry grasses, summer's end.
