'We are the back of the line! The back of the line! The back of the line!'

'We are the back of the line! The back of the line! The back of the line!'

While watering the spearmint early this afternoon I heard some rhythmic chanting coming from up the street. It sounded like a group of children, and it was growing louder.

I peered over the fence to behold about 2 dozen elementary school-aged kids marching along the sidewalk, decked out in bright orange t-shirts, accompanied by a handful of adults coaching them on. The kids in the rear third of the group were chanting:

"We are the back of the line!
The back of the line! The back of the line!
We are the back of the line!
Where is the front?"

The kids in the front third replied:

"We are the front of the line!
The front of the line! The front of the line!
We are the front of the line!
Where is the middle?"

The kids in the middle took up the refrain:

"We are the middle of the line!
The middle of the line! The middle of the line!
We are the middle of the line!
Where is the back?"

Then it was the kids in the back's turn again:

"We are the back of the line!
The back of the line! The back of the line!
We are the back of the line!
Where is the front?"

And so it went as they proceeded down the street.
