So anyways......
Its seems to have become one of those great challenges to define yourself as a composer- write a set of variations on Paganini's theme. The most famous of these, I believe, are those by Brahms, Rachmaninoff, and Lutoslawski....
Actually, Rachy wrote his "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" b/c one of his buddies said that there were no more possible variations of the theme. Well, Rachy certainly showed him up!
I have to say though, the Lutoslawski variations are my favorite, primarily for its progressive harmonic language. I mean, he really stretches the tonality of the piece, and yet it never becomes atonal. Plus, it just has this drive that you cannot stop- it just keeps propelling you forward.....
Perhaps one day, MoeMoe and I will hook back up and the ouD Duo will live on.
