dig this.

I'm walking home from school ... past the dupont circle subway station. my friends got off the bus and walked in the opposite direction toward cosi for sandwiches. I have ten dollars -- the rest of my money for the week -- and I don't want to waste it on an overpriced sandwich. I spend ninety-five cents at the vendor outside the escalator into the metro and buy a bag of peanut m&ms. nine dollars five cents for the rest of the week. after minor internal debate, I cross connecticut avenue away from the subway stop toward sixteenth street, hoping not to run for any buses in ninety degree weather. there's a flower shop that I've barely noticed before between connecticut and eighteenth, hidden in the shade of kramer's books and afterwards. I almost walk by it, just looking long enough to register how beautiful all the colors are. when I'm almost to the corner, I stop and turn around, walk back until I'm standing in front of the flowers in buckets outside and stare for a while. nine dollars. after a bit of debate over what looks the prettiest and "what can I afford?" I spend eight dollars forty-six cents on a bouquet of daisies. I kind of want to put them in my room. I know I'll give them to my mother.

a guy buys flowers on a tuesday only because he knows the girl he likes but doesn't really know (beyond the fact that her sixth period class is government and her seventh period class is ap art history) works on tuesdays from dismissal until seven. he doesn't know what he'll do with the flowers, but it makes for a good excuse to linger in the shop with a good view of them.

another boy buys flowers for the party he forgot he had to go to. he figures it'll make a good impression on the hostess.

a twenty-something year old student buys a few tulips for her shit-hole apartment. she pays too much for it, and it's in tribeca, and she's two months behind on the rent ... again. everything in there is dull. her clothes are faded. the windows have no shades, and there's a lot of light, but all the glass across one wall is kind of harsh. she gets the tulips for her "kitchen" counter. they make it feel more like home.

he hurt her. he always did when they argued. he didn't feel badly -- not too badly -- but he buys her flowers on the way home because the grocery store downstairs stays open late. he buys the only bunch with no broken stems. he throws away the one flower in the bouquet that's turning rotten and brown.

exploration of an action. any one thing.
