Good Night and Good Luck

Just a quick note to tell anyone who hasn’t already seen Good Night and Good Luck to do so - it’s fantastic. Beautifully filmed in black and white, with meticulous attention to detail and, of course, a great story. Don’t wait for DVD, it’s one of those films that has more impact if seen in a theatre.

We saw it in the Rialto on Broadway and for once there were no ads before the film, it just launched straight in. It was great not to have that assault of light and colour to start, as it would have been too much of a contrast with the film itself. Throughout the movie there seemed to be less light emanating from the screen than normal, which had the effect of concentrating the attention totally on the story. I felt there was something not quite right with the sound, but later Steve told me this was because it was all filmed in mono. This was a brilliant stroke because the original footage of the McCarthy trials blended perfectly with the modern filming.

There’s no music at all, except occasional footage of a chocolate-voiced jazz singer between scenes. It’s amazingly sensual - lots of cigarette smoke curling and close-ups and eloquent pauses. Fantastic as art without taking into account the story, which is utterly engrossing, even more so because it’s all true. A testament to the power of the media to do good instead of damage, and literally the best film I’ve seen in years.
