A matter of the heart

I’ve just had the coolest experience. I’ve been out interviewing for a rush story I have to write today on a restaurant. I was hanging around the kitchen observing and making notes and talking to people while trying not to get in anyone’s way, when about 40 minutes into my visit I started staring at the photographer’s assistant. I knew there was something familiar about him, but couldn’t quite figure it out. Then I realised.

Fourteen years ago I was going to a small Presbyterian youth group. One weekend there was a weekend-long prayer vigil for a boy of about 19 who was having a heart transplant. (CS, you might remember this.) I’ve often wondered over the years what happened to him, and now I know. There he was, fit as a flea, running around after the photographer. I introduced myself (he didn’t remember me, but I was a lot younger than him) and he was staggered that I remembered him. We chatted for a bit and discovered some mutual acquaintances and he talked about his travel. I was just so delighted that it had all worked so well - I remember seeing him white as a sheet and shaky at his first visit to the youth group after the operation, and now to see him well and happy and busy - it was just the coolest thing. Love modern science.
