Another family milestone passed - my little sister got engaged this weekend. I was probably the least surprised I’ve ever been by the news, but am so happy that Luke will be part of our family. He’s awesome - lovely, gentle, treats Nikki beautifully and is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. Mealtime with Luke is a challenge - you’re usually laughing too hard to eat. And if that wasn’t enough to endear him to me, as they were leaving our place last night after telling us the news, he spied a couple of my Disney CDs on the table. “Hey, cool!” he said. “Can I borrow these?” Any man who likes Disney songs is all right by me. I remember once having a long car-ride with him and tossing out every song title I could think of. He’s word-perfect on every song in Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback of Notre Dame, and he’ll have a pretty good stab at anything from Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. He’s shaky on The Little Mermaid, but that’s OK. He’s still young.
It’s amazing how families get built - I keep saying to my sisters that they owe me for their husbands, seeing as they both met them through my husband. They’re not nearly grateful enough, in my opinion. Actually, my brother in law (Steve’s brother) will no doubt claim credit for this match. At my middle sister’s wedding he suggested in his best man’s speech that Nikki and Luke (who’d never met) get together to complete the circle. When Luke introduced himself to Nikki and asked her to dance half as a joke, my brother in law stopped the rock song that was playing and put on “When a man loves a woman”. OK, I’ll give him this one.
