About Cuijk

Not sure if there are many interested, but here is more.

Here is some more information about the village that I live in.

Yes, village. Cuijk is not officially a city or town. According to legend, it used to have city rights, but the story goes that Cuijk sold those to the nearby town of Grave. Actual proof for this has never been found, though.
City rights made a difference for a town in the second millenium, as with those there came town privileges, among which were the right to have a market, trade and the establishment of guilds.

Most people in Cuijk are proud they don't live in an official city. Living in a village has a more friendly feel to it.

This is the official insignia of Cuijk. The image was last changed in 1233, under the reign of Albert van Cuijk. The original one, designed for Hendrik van Cuijk, did not have the merlets.
Merlets? Yes, the little ducks are "merlets". Traditionally they are pictured without a beak and without legs.
The background of the shield is gold. The crown carries 15 pearls, 3 of which are raised.

Cuijk does not only consist of the village of Cuijk; the surrounding villages of Beers, Haps, Vianen, Katwijk St Agatha and Linden also belong to the area.

Cuijk has a sister-town in England, called Maldon. Once every two years a small group from Cuijk goes to Maldon, to reenforce the ties between the places, and the other year a delegation from Maldon comes to Cuijk for the same reason.
The town of Prerov in Czechia is another sister-town of Cuijk.

Some of the interesting places to visit within Cuijk are:

The mill Jan van Cuijk (which I can see from my balcony)

The museum "Ceuclum", where an original part of the old roman bridge is on display.

The leather-processing museum

The church of St. Martinus, a remarkable church that has two towers:

In Katwijk there is the Free Market, a very large marketplace open every Saturday, where everyone can rent a stall and sell their goods, be it used or new. The Free Market is very popular, especially on rainy days as it is one giant hall.

Near Linden we have a large recreational area called the Kraayenbergse Plassen. It consists of several large fields for sunbathing and a group of 4 adjoining lakes. Two of those are natural, two are man-made, and a fifth is in the making. The sand that comes from the lakes is sold to other areas where there's a need for it.
