there are four of us in Sunflower River, and i'm inclined to feel that it's a nearly perfect size, because we are not too large to be hamstrung by our own consensus process (which i have seen happen in groups of 10+ people particularly), yet we are large enough to accomplish a lot that one or two alone couldn't do. plus all the ecological and social benefits of living in a group; lighter footprint, more emotional support, all that. :)

we're going to get two nubian milking goats next spring--as soon as we can get their shed & pen built, a field laser-levelled for flood irrigation (we have the water rights, but the field is too high) seeded, and fenced for pasture. we learned with the rabbits why not to just throw animal housing together and figure we'd make it better later. we'll wait to get the goats till we have their home ready! :) but fresh milk is so worth it. right now we buy whole cow milk from the organic dairy down the street, which is darn good. we have 30 laying hens, and are presently raising another 25 broiler chickens, as well as the 18 turkeys. and one Great Pyrennees guard puppy.

you sound like you need a farm! :) going in with a group made it possible for us to buy more land than we could have individually, as well as possible for us to do WAY more with it. we have a fire ring, a ritual area, fruit trees, an extensive garden, a meditation ground, and plans for a root cellar, a labyrinth, that pasture, more gardens, and a strawbale passive solar community building.

You have a Great Pyr?? I have a 22 month old Newfy! (that's him in the icon at 3 months) He's more of a speed bump than a guard dog, but that's what the australian cattle dog is for (and she's very good at her job).

Well, we kind of have a ready-made group as we're a poly family (there are 3 of us, plus 2 kids)... and I fully expect that to help with getting the farm (both in terms of what we can afford as well as what we can feasibly work). Your setup sounds LOVELY!
