This popular mystery series by Alexander McCall Smith is now a TV series; it premieres on HBO March 29. (It's a 13-part series.) The heroine is Precious Ramotswe, an African woman who sets up her detective agency in Botswana. (The two-hour opener was filmed on location.) I'm happy to see these books made it to TV!
Btw, there's a similar series of mysteries where the heroine is from Ghana, but the stories are set in Harlem, not Africa. Miriam was educated by the Catholic sisters and is smart and persistent, with an interesting family... I came across these stories by G. Miki Hayden in the Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. I've tracked the issues down, and I see that A Murder on 123rd Street ran in the March 2006 issue. (Possibly the first in the series, but I'm not sure.) Imported from African was in the September 2007 issue; A Killing in Midtown was in the January/February 2008 issue; and The Birthday Watch was in the September 2008 issue.
I enjoyed both of these mystery series--good mysteries and interesting settings and characters.
