i love how my two term papers are absolute contradictions of one another.
for geography, i am researching the process of the deforestation of the northern forests of maine, michigan, wisconsin, minnesota... that area. the professor has drilled it into us that this is absolutely an academic paper, "not a polemic... i am not interested in your personal opinion of the subject." so basically, i get to write a paper about how the european settlers exploited the virgin forest, but not actually say anything about that story that would be useful to anyone.
in contrast, for world arts and cultures, i am writing a ten point manifesto for my life that stems from eric schlosser's "in the strawberry fields," vandana shiva's earth principles and the tattireeya upanishad (basically, that we should not exploit the earth and its people). the assignment for this paper reads: "academic language is completely unacceptible, as it tends to falsify, inflate, deflect, or otherwise calcify the nature of your own experiences."
both of these papers are being marketed as life-changing experiences.
somehow, i only see that describing one and not the other.
