Wow! So almost everyone I know is about to start exams, final papers, or whatever the professor has decided will be the last mile stone for them to hurl before passing the class. My school is a bit different though. I've become very disheartened by our education system as of late, and this really took the cake. We are supposed to make a list of students who are failing for the year. (The policy is that if you fail English or Math that you get retained). Once that list is made, we have to prove that we tried interventions to help them pass (naw... we just sit on our asses and watch them fail). After that, the EOG scores are put into the mix. Finally, that list of students is sent to a different school for them to look at the statistics. If the child is too big, too old, tried hard, or has a parent who is a pain in the butt, they get to pass. Apparently, last year out of a list of 14 who should have failed, none got retained. Now, I understand social promotion to an extent. The problem is that the kids understand too. I have been told on more than one occasion that a child was going to pass no matter what, so why should they try. Sorry... I know that this is just a rant, but it just seems to me that if we are going to have promotion standards, we should stick to them.
Other than that life is still pretty hectic. The last days of school are crazy for us with EOG prep, EOGs, assemblies, and the fact that we aren't supposed to teach curriculum after the tests. We have a walkthrough of our house with the builder to make sure that there isn't anything that he needs to fix so far. My uncle, his new lady friend, and my grandmother are coming down for my sister's senior recital. I'm so proud of her! She is graduating with High Honors from UNC and then is going to ODU on a full ride for creative writing. WOW!
I'm looking forward to summer fraternity! I love the Chargrill meetings and the spontaneous events following. I won't be at the first meeting because I have Wildcat Idol unti 7:30 that night.
Sorry I wasn't at formal meeting last night. Brett didn't get home until 7:15 though and we were just finishing dinner when it was starting. Congratulations to everyone who got installed as an officer, to everyone who just served as an officer, and especially to Silas!
Hope everyone is having a good week and thanks for all of those "helpful" suggestions on what my new hobby should be ;) The jury is still out, but I'm still taking suggestions :)
