teaching and art

video a friend found.  I think it speaks for itself.

What I find awesome is HOW it speaks for itself.  It doesn't need to be spelled out or explained, it just happens and the details are revealed.  I've been trying to explain to people what I think teaching is all about.  A teacher has to lead a student in the same way that a good artist or writer leads the reader (or consumer of whatever art medium) to what is below the surface.  In this video, we are never told she's blind, but it becomes apparent VERY quickly based upon her actions which, i might add, are not stupidly stereotyped.

If I want my students to learn something, I have to prove to them that it is worth their time.  If I cannot, I don't deserve to be teaching it.  If I can prove that something is worth their time get them invested, then my job is done.  Of course, this isn't the most realistic situation.  I don't expect to ever get everyone completely invested in everything.  But at least I can be honest, be on their level, and bring my SUBJECT to their level so that it is real enough to become invested in.  None of this abstract bullshit until they can come to grips on their own why abstraction has any value at all!

Ok, getting off the soap-box now.  I liked this video.  It is cute beyond comparison and is vaguely related to things that keep me up into the wee hours of the night.
