So the show last night was pretty good , basically it was exactly what I expected of it. They used the ESO to play videogame music and afterwards I met Tommy T and Jack Wall. Review and pictures follows.
So as we can see here the place was pretty well sold out, I took this near the end of the intermission just as everyone was getting settled again.
Meanwhile up on stage the orchestra was getting back to their seats as the loading bar on the giant screen neared completion.
After the show there was a meet and greet , I'd say maybe a couple hundred people stuck around to get things signed and chat it up with the video game pianists sister, some bioware dude, Jack Wall and Tommy T. Andrew snapped this shot of Andrea with Tommy T.
Meanwhile , continuing my tradition of looking as stupid as possible in photographs, I knelt next to tommy t.
Speaking of Mr. tallirico , the guy is super short. I mean I'm a tiny dude myself but Tommy T is like 5 feet tops. He's also really skinny so he's just a small dude. Poor guy looked completly exhausted as did jack wall, so they should be though, they put on a hell of a show.
Anyway, here I have copypastad a mini review of the songs played I posted at neogaf.
Yeah so the concert occured yesterday and today and I quite enjoyed it , sucks that square wouldn't let them use footage from games/movies during the final fantasy and kingdom hearts stuff but it was still a decent selection-
Classic arcade melody- this was basically the opening act and it had 15-20 second clips with matching music from many old school games- punchout, ghosts and goblins , frogger, space invaders and a few others. It was well done.
Metal gear solid- this was a well done piece mixing a couple metal gear songs togethor , of course it was mostly the main theme song that we all love so much but they had a tiny on stage interactive sort of thing going on with accompanying in game music to go with it. Also this was one of a few songs precursed by a quick video of someone involved with the game in question, in this case Hideo Kojima.
God of War- a video from Jaffe himself plays telling you to enjoy the awesome music in teh game now in full orchestra. This was my personal highlight actually becuase I love god of wars soundtrack. It was also a mix of 2 or 3 tracks.
Space invaders- the first of 2 interactive playtime bits. Basically someone from the audience got called up to play a huge screen version of galaga, if he beat the first stage in 2 minutes he got a big prize , the orchestra played music along with the game.
Myst- never played nor really wanted to play myst but the sound selection present made the game look better then it likely actually is.
Medal of honour- instead of showing game footage, possibly for liscensing reasons there were WWII clips played and the song was the theme from the first medal of honour I think. The video clips went through the progress of the war, showing sad people, fighting , eventually the bomb and finally the music gets happier and it flashes headlines of WAR OVER WE WON etc. It was interesting.
CIV 4 - Never really played civ 4 but I think it was basically the entire opening video to the game mixed with some in game music.
FF8- Liberi Fatali- Everyone knows this and has heard it a million times , it sounded great live but I've heard it so many times I would rather have had a castlevania song or something.
Zelda- With a video from Koji Kondo, it was mostly the zelda theme we all know and love and a short variation of it at the end.
Frogger- Like space invaders but this time with 2 audience members who competed against one another in frogger , again with orchestrated sound.
Kingdom hearts- the main theme with disney clips instead of actual kingdom hearts clips, square wouldn't let them use ingame footage for some reason. Still sounded good if you like KH's OST
Sonic The hedgehog- This one was nice, it was basically most of sonic 1's soundtrack witha bit of sonic 2 , it had a video from yuji naka.
World of warcraft- A somewhat extended orchestral version of the opening theme music that plays during the first CG movie. Good stuff, especiall towards the end.
Videogame pianist- apparently this dude and his sister share showtimes, his sister was doing it tonight and she played a 10 song jumpledeedoo of final fantasy music, less then 30 seconds on each song and each one went directly into the next one. Some was good some was allright, but her piano skills were pretty spectacular. The speed was just unreal.
Jade Empire- I guess it was the main theme for the game, It was a nice piece created by Jack Hall the acting composer.
Advent Rising- The sole piece of music composed by Tommy T, it was actually pretty good and makes the game look enjoyable but then I remember all thepoor reviews it got...
Super Mario bros- a montage of sorts with a bunch of mario music, mario 1 I should say.
It was followed by the videogame pianist doing mario world, her fingers basically became a blur, it was insane.
Halo 1,2 - the main themes from each game both of them as awesome as always.
Halo 3- Tommy T came out with a small electric guitar and they basically did the score to that old teaser trailer. It was pretty good.
The finale is something everyone's also heard a million times- One Winged Angel. Much like liberi fatali I've heard it too many times but it was still fantastic to see it done live.
I have to say overall I enjoyed videogames live and will happily buy tickets for it when they come next year. They'll be in calgary in november if anyone from down there is interested.
