Day One
Morning at food pantry. Working folks struggling to make ends meet. People rarely choose the legumes.
Working moms dressed nice. Retired folks. Pregnant woman. Homeless folks chose from day foods.
Nobody chose the bags of rice or beans. Those would go significantly farther than everything else.
What would it be like for me to have to feed myself or my kids with such a limited access to food? Limited quantity and range. No fruit except the one can of pears.
Afternoon went to go to house work site, but rain came down hard. Had to pull over and eventually turn back.
Raining hard now. Feels cooler. Seriously close lightening. 😳 As I worry about Gaelan, Eric and the rest driving back to the mission in this heavy rain, I am reminded of all the people who lost family in Katrina - 20 foot, miles long walls of water.
Mt 2 - the wise men returned home by another route.
Instead of asking God to be with us in difficult places, why not sometimes ask God to lead us to a better, healthier place? God dwells in us. What are we afraid of?
2:35pm Rain is letting up a bit. Most of the crew were out on sites and they’ve now come back, quite wet. Perhaps we’ll spend the afternoon in conversation, education, or devotional. 💕
DAY TWO
Loaves and Fishes - some same faces as Monday. Very friendly and grateful folks for the most part.
DAY FIVE
Very humid! I am not working outside. Heat index is supposed to reach 105. I am sitting on the porch in the shade and sweat is dripping off of me.
I did some inside work in the bbm kitchen, and helped deliver food to the Micah Center. They don’t normally serve meals there, but occasionally folks donate sandwiches and such. Today, however, a cruise ship dropped off food because the rain had cancelled their cruise. It was a feast! Rice, grit cakes, a creamy mushroom sauce, chicken, and American Chop Suey! Cruise food! What a wonderful surprise treat!
