Oh, you guys. How is Sungkyunkwan & Scandal so good? How? Hooooow? Good move, Yoochun. IA with Jaejoong about this being a turning point; I mean, it's definitely a drama you can be proud of being a part of (is that gramatically correct? *cringe*). So far, anyway. HALFWAY POINT. DD: 10 episodes left :(( Anyway, it's time for another entry of spazz because
skkscandal doesn't seem to have a spazz post for ep10 and I have to make do on my own. Belated, since I only found the links to ep10 Friday because KBS is being a whiny biotch and blocking viikii :lll But we will always prevail /evil laugh
So! Onto the ep10 (and ep9) spazz (warning -- obviously spoilery and looooong because I went into detailed mode :O).
(cap by dramabeans)
♥ HOW MUCH DID I DIE FLAILING when I saw Yoonhee dressed as a gisaeng to help Sunjoon out?!? Silent screams all around. I couldn't. And judging by Sunjoon's face, he couldn't either. lol. I had to pause the video to snicker awhile at his bewilderment. I swear, she is a quick thinker. If it had been left up to me, Sunjoon would be a goner by now. I'm going to quickly insert my little skdjskjd for Jaeshin blocking the road here. YOU CANNOT PASS etcetc except much hotter. Excuse me while I fan myself.
♥ Smug!Yongha is so jjang. This is him kind of neener-neener-ing InSoo at how Insoo and he (Yongha) KNOW it's Sunjoon in that storage room but haha he (Insoo) can't catch them. lol. I know I wasn't all rave review-y about Yongha at first, maybe because everyone else was so into him without him doing much yet but you guys, he is AWESOME. Like I said, he would be formidable in politics. He KNOWS THINGS. And he knows how to get in and out of things. I'm thinking he's like a Joseon version of Heechul (keke) -- flamboyant, unconventional, devil-may-care, but will move mountains for things/people he wants to move mountains for. And, take note, there seems to be little doubt that he can. Damn but Joseon F4 is awesome. There is no other word for it.
♥ BE STILL MY TACHYCARDIC, ARRYTHMIC HEART. This is Yoonhee and Sunjoon fleeing the scene with minions of the evil Minister of War on their heels. They're jumping a fence and.... Aghhhhh. I'm sorry if I say this too many times in the course of discussing (and watching) this drama, but. I CAN'T. The way they smiled at each other, kind of caught in the moment, just. killed. me. It's such a pretty scene of what things could be ideally, conventionally (well, minus the fact that they're jumping a fence) -- him reaching gentlemanlily out to help her down -- and it makes you think so many things about how their situation in reality is and... I don't know. I can't concretize it rn. (lol)
♥ I wonder really how many people fleeing scenes of crimes indulge in heart-to-heart talks in the middle of shit going down. Is this feasible, practical? Does the adrenaline make you say deep things out of the blue? lol. Anyway, here're the two of them again having a ~discussion~ moments after evading the Minister of War's forces. I love how Sunjoon turns the words Yoonhee told him when she found out about him giving 50 nyang as her 'scholarship' around on her and how he smoothly segues it into telling her his motivations for doing so. Man, he's not the best for nothing. My heartstrings, they are tugged -- "I did not take pity on you. As it wasn't for you. At first, it was because I thought it was a waste of your talent. Then later, I needed you. If I made a friend, I thought it would be nice if it was you (omgomgomgomg). It's just that I didn't know how since it was my first time." WEEPS OMG. Why am I so addicted to dramas with robot boys with no friends (Playful Kiss, anyone?)??
♥ Another dynamic I love -- Yongha and Jaeshin. Fandom loves (and ships) them too, and I cannot blame them. First cap -- who the heck dares to touch a crazy horse's face like that but Yongha? 2nd cap -- look of disgust @ him blocking the road, which Yongha knows would be a typical Jaeshin response. 3rd cap -- OMG WOOBIFICATION COMPLETE. Jaeshin getting his hackles up about that little 'Daemul threw his body' tidbit. I love him. (And I would bet Yongha's Forbidden City that he said that just to get Jaeshin riled up.) 4th cap - Frikking lol @ Yongha's inappropriate-for-the-present-situation look of surprised appreciation at 'Daemul' dressed as a gisaeng. Also, the juxtaposition of his face and Sunjoon's profile is just ART, ok. Needed to be capped. 5th cap - I just loved the way he said 'Yahhhh' thinking back at Yoonhee's appearance. So much to say about 30 seconds lol
♥ Another great thing about SKKS are the supporting characters. Case in point, these two. Agh. Insoo, I look forward to the day you woobify for Chosun. But in the meantime, the way they interact with their exchanges of thinly veiled threats (from him) and sweetly delivered you-don't-scare-mes (from her) are nail-bitingly great to watch. And the way she curtsies with disdain. How does one do that??
♥ Another great character, Insoo's father, the Minister of War. He kind of reminds me of an old college teacher of mine -- at times so silly in her notions that you can't take her seriously (even if she's dead serious), at times straight-up scary that you get reminded that yes, she holds the power over those 3 units you need to pass 3rd year. DD:
♥ The three stooges, Insoo's henchmen. One is srsly stupid and seems harmless, one is kinda stupid but harmful and the other one... You know, it's always the quiet ones. (Also, can I just say, kinda-stupid-but-harmful has been taking lots of pictures with Yoochun bts. And Jaejoong. Secret Cassie alert. :p)
Anyway, plotting, plotting, plotting abound on both sides. And again, Yongha shows his knack for just knowing things, it's scary. To lighten things a little, have a hilarious scene I can watch forever --
♥ HAHAHA Jaeshin, you are too cuteeeee with your femophobia. Clutching the covers, I can't take it. And you have to see him scoot his pillow and whole self away from Yoonhee hahaha. And finally ends up breathing down Sunjoon's neck, to which Sunjoon offers up an observation --
Sunjoon: Sahyung, this isn't your usual sleeping place.
Jaeshin: *with gritted teeth* My usual sleeping place is this whole room, so go to sleep.
*Yoonhee rolls and crashes onto his back and he reflexively clutches Sunjoon's arm*
VERY LOLLL
♥ Nothing, you just wanted to show you the contrast between Jaeshin and everyone else.
♥ Herp derp lol. (I am seven, obviously.) Nooo, but this is Sunjoon exasperated with himself for having a hmmm, strange attraction to YoonheeYoonshik? About a third of the episode had him staring at her lips (which are really pretty, I might add).
♥United in their glowering for her to finish her food. I could listen to their harmonized 'anjo!' all day. Augh.
♥ And the crux of the whole episode -- finding the culprit. Pretty thought-provoking stuff he spits out at them, making them take a hard look at the state of the nation. Yoonhee, at least, is given pause and she decides to let the matter go, feeling she has no right to point a finger at him when they (the scholars, the 'learned') seem to be feeding the cycle of 'the rich get richer, the poor get poorer'. Sunjoon, ever unbending on matters such as the acknowledgement of a wrongdoing (maybe especially because dropping it means Yoonhee is not cleared? dare I hope?), says crime's a crime. But she says (AND I AM SO AFFECTED ;_;), "That boy is similar to who I used to be. Back then fortunately I met Lee Sunjoon and I got to become like this." Basically, I love her. It's like... he sees the world in black and white and she introduces him to the shades of gray, makes him see that there's this to deal with as well.
And so Yongha says (and I quote it because I find it so symbolic of her entire presence at Sungkyunkwan, turning them all on their ears), "That Daemul, he really has a strange talent for confusing people." :p
♥ "No matter what base things he did, a father's still a father. A son's still a son. That's... the dirtiest." -Jaeshin
When they recon to discuss what they're going to do for the exam the next day, Yoonhee can't bring herself to bring the boy to the stand. She's looking at the bigger picture. Whoever is making the poor poorer is the ultimate culprit (man, this is giving me Ever After flashbacks). And The Ultimate Culprit's son is in the room. Poor, poor Sunjoon. I quoted the line above because I think it serves a double purpose. It gives an evaluation of what Jaeshin thinks Sunjoon will do, which is side with his father and not reveal Noron doings, AND it gives you an idea of Jaeshin's own sentiments toward his own father. But, Sunjoon is Sunjoon and Jaeshin is Jaeshin. And this drama is this drama, which always ends in a bang so you never really know.
♥ "Girls. Girls do not have the qualifications to become officials. You have said this before. But professor, this is strange. Why is Joseon, this nation, in such a state? Hasn't it always been govened by men qualified to be officials?" - Yoonhee to Professor whatsit who knows she's a girl
Damn but she's good.
♥ Favorite. I swear, this archery place is the best spot for conversations between the two of them. Basically, she comes to him to speak to him about what she plans to do the next day in front of the king but she also adds that what she's going to do won't nearly be as effective as if HE would do it.
Sunjoon: I might disappoint you.
Yoonhee: Even so, I believe in you, Lee Sunjoon. More than I believe in myself. You always work so hard... The truth is you're striving to be a good person... If it's a decision made by Lee SunJoon, I think it'll be the right answer. Even if that road is not the answer I thought of.
Their faith in each other, omg. This is a tenuous position Sunjoon is put in, caught between his father whom he has respected for his entire life and his ideals, which he has pretty much lived up to. I DON'T KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN /bites nails
♥ So he goes to his father and... to some extent, I think he's made his decision already; maybe he went to see his father to see if there's something, ANYTHING that would sway him. Or maybe he just needed the affirmation that one must to follow his ideals to the bitter end, no matter if family is involved; that his father believed he would not disappoint. And I swear, Sunjoon looked like he wanted to cry. The disillusionment of a son is a dangerous thing, I think, and very painful to watch. Props to Yoochun for conveying it well. He looked like he died a little bit inside.
♥ Jaeshin, omo. Breaking my heart talking about his hyung, who was mentioned in passing last time as having an association with Yoonhee's father. OMG. I couldn't. When he said that thing about younger brothers imitating their older brothers, I had a mental image of him being younger and idolizing his brother then being tragedized when hyung died. Sad little boys always make me sadder than sad little girls (I am not sympathetic to my own gender lol). And you could see the exact spot where he hardened and became the way he is. And confronting the thief boy about having another chance to make things right, to be different from what he is now, I was so struck by the fact he (Jaeshin) was in SUCH a position to say things like that because you KNOW he does things he feels strongly about. He does that whole fly-by-night deal because he's working toward something he believes in, no matter if that's not what's status quo. it just... damn.
And then the ending. You guys sure know how to end with a bang, SKK writers. Dang.
