OK. I need to release my pent-up love for Sungkyunkwan Scandal (or Sungkyunkwan & Scandal, wtfever). You guys. You guys. I don't know if you'll take this as crazed rambling, but LISTEN. This is the good stuff, ok. And I'm not just being Yoochun-biased. Lord knows wild horses couldn't drag me to watch a historical drama and I could maybe pretend for my stanning standards but I wouldn't be daydreaming about it at work like this ksjdskjdksjdk. I CAN'T BREATHE. The story and the goddamn gorgeous cast, what even. I am going to try to coheresize my love for it so you won't lock me up as craycray so bear with me:
1. I'm going to start with the girl, Kim Yeonhee (who'll later go by Yoonshik, her brother's name). She has that innocent air Korean dramas tend to favor in their female leads, but what I like about her is she has underlying steel. And she's smart, ok. Not your typical bumbling heroine. She has a mother and a sickly brother and she basically uses her brains to keep them out of debt and herself out of the concubine house. Chyeah.
Also, I love how this drama is treating her so far. When she's determined to do something, sure, the male lead kind of enables her to do so but... it's not him saving her day. It's her saving her own goddamn day with maybe an eyeopener or two from him or him showing her how but she puts in the work, jeers back at him if she thinks he doesn't know what he's talking about (and dang, but he always seems to know what he's talking about) and... SO I LOVE HER, OK. She did like 30 chinups on a tree. And restrained herself from pouncing on Yoochun and Yoo Ah In sleeping unknowingly beside her. Man, that is a real test of perseverance. I probably would've just thrown myself to the ground and said, 'fine, make me a concubine' and find ways to get out of it later. heehee :l
She's going to bring them all to their knees.♥ And lol omg, get this -- they call her 'Daemul', which means 'big THING' You know. HAHAHAHA. Boys are so crass omg :p
(omg tell me that isn't in the least bit YUMMMEHHH)
2. Lee Sunjoon, the male lead (played by Yoochun who, apparently, I will watch in anything :/), is this principled son of a high-ranking official. Setting aside the fact that I want to tie him to myself forever, Sunjoon is super do-you-have-a-stick-up-your-*rse, in a *_* kind of way. (Was that eloquent or what? haha) It's just... he has things he believes in, like ~equality~ and ~a better Joseon~ and he's not afraid to push for that, whether in school or in front of the king. I agree that he's been sheltered by his high social standing, so you can look at it as 'oh look at the cute little rich boy trying to walk a mile in the commoner's shoes' but it isn't like that at all. Certainly, he knows zilch about the Real World but I guess that's where the two of them'll play the foil to each other -- her schooling him with reality and him plunging forward with that untainted, idealistic vision of his. OK, PAT, THIS IS NOT A SOCIAL SCIENCE ESSAY. But he has a really great little speech (in the rain skdjs) about how people never choose what circumstances they're born in, just what they make of today. I'm not doing it justice, but that's the gist and at that point I was so in love with him, I would've eloped with my computer screen.
Also, how hot is heeee. Yeah, that's the end-all-be-all of it. Haha. Dying of how take-charge he is in this drama. Damn, Yoochun. Especially in that archery outfit skdjskdjskd HOLD ME, SOMEONE.
3. Moon Jaeshin aka Geoll-oh(sp?), their roommate and senior. He's on the opposite political party as Sunjoon so he's sniffing at why the heck Sunjoon is in his dorm. But he pretty much lets him stay. ~Beginning of beautiful friendship/love triangle~? YES PRS. (Lucky girl.) I guess you could say he's the bad boy on campus, wearing I guess the Joseon version of distressed jeans and a leather jacket? lol Woobie #1♥ What's awesome about him is his ~secret life~ and the fact that he can silence people with a stare. Also, his ability to send waves of disdain toward just the right people is jjang.
4. A lot of people are raving about Yongha (played by Song Joonki) because he's the playboy trickster and I do like him because he balances things out but I guess I don't like him on the level that people seem to elevate him to. Probably because I still don't know which way he swings. But I guess that's part of his charm as well, the unpredictability. We'll see.
5. The interactions between everybody. How Daemul is one of the boys lol. Ofc, gratuitous scenes of her being scandalized by The Ways (and bodies xDD) of Men. Girls falling in love with her. Roommates being roomie-like♥ Sunjoon's manservant (lol idk) doting on him :3
6. Well, I'm going to plunk down a number just for the relationship between Sunjoon and Yoonhee/Yoonshik. THE INCONVENIENT FEELINGS, OMG. Well, not expounded on atm but /screams/ I CAN'T WAIT. Like... he's always looking for her and she's always looking for him. Cries. And since at this point, they're doing this friendship thing, I love how he's treating her like an equal (I hate saying that phrase). And pushing her to be the best she can be (lol stop using cliches, Pat). But no, really. Tbh, that rarely happens in dramas. And... as I said, this particular drama is treating their relationship of being equals well. You know how in other dramas, because you as a viewer know that the girl in guy's clothes is really a girl, they kind of take liberties and you're ok with that? Augh, how do I explain... Like, there's a scene where she keeps failing at archery and he keeps hammering at her to go again and again and again, true to his perfectionist nature. If it were a lesser drama, it'd have her stop, see a wound on her finger and cry and he'll heal her wounds and give her words of reassurance with some scorchy gazing and then she'll ~make it~. But here, he challenges her to stop making excuses and proceeds to have her do those aforementioned chinlifts on a tree. Idk. It makes me happy. :p Not that I'd want my future boyfriend to ever make me do chinlifts from a tree, but you know what I mean.
7. Story-wise, veryyyyy interesting. I'm on tenterhooks every week, man.
8. Watching it on viikii is the frikking best, ok. Witness comment above re: Sunjoon drinking. I lol'd so much (and yes, I've taken to printscreening from viikii. What is my life.)
Also watched a ton of DBSK things but I'll save that for another day. Or tumblr. So, can you guys pls watch so I can have someone to flail in detail with? :((( PRETTY PLEASE.
