CSS hell

ETA: Leaving this post up so that I can look back on it next time I have a computer meltdown, but both issues seem to have been vanquished. Posting about it was far from pointless, though -- without your collective help I'd be cursing and trying to teach myself CSS right now, and Firefox would still be doing both maddening things ( Read more... )

I don't know what the difference is either, but it's nice to know that somebody isn't affected by this. I'm running 3.6.13 too, and you wouldn't think only one of us would be affected. I don't remember whether you're on Mac, Linux, or PC, but the support discussion struck me as implying that it was a cross-platform issue anyway.

At this point I'd normally go back to blaming my privacy settings, and hunting frantically through all of them once again in search of whatever I needed to turn off. But there's that support discussion suggesting otherwise. And I've already been through all of the things I might turn off once without results; there are still boxes saying Target: whateverurlblahblahblah popping up almost every time I go near a link, like little pebbles falling on my head.

Yes, Universe, I hear you. I should just put down the computer and go chip ice off the back walk, shouldn't I? Okay, okay, doing it any minute now.

Ohgodohgod. I feel your pain, for it is my own pain as well. My own browser issue is now fixed, but I'm the go-to person for my parents when they have trouble with their home network. They're on Windows, but I look at the relevant Windows panels and like a sucker I think, "Well, this seems straightforward enough! As long as I'm willing to be patient and try things over and over, surely I will figure it out ( ... )

I'm confused, if the problem is Firefox, why are you talking about Chrome?

I have Firefox 3.6.13 and this isn't happening to me.

Then it must be one of the privacy things after all, and I'll have to make another attempt to figure out which one.

But I was going on about Chrome because according to the Mozilla support page I'd found, the issue can be fixed by going into the normally-hidden settings and editing/adding a file called userChrome.css to the appropriate folder in one's profile. And I found the right folder, which -- sure enough -- contains some hints about adding one's own customizations. But the hints assume that you know far more about what you're doing than I in fact know.

Not that you'll be surprised to hear that latter part.

Apparently "chrome" is a term used to refer to a GUI - which means Google are confusing idiots for naming their browser that.

I am pretty good with CSS but as I'm not having the problem I'm not sure how to help. I could look at your css file and see if there are any basic things like closing statements etc if you like? You could email it over to brightwanderer at gmail.com

Oh, one question - have you tried turning off all your extensions and starting Firefox like that, just to check this isn't happening because of something you've got installed? Usually worth trying, that's how I fixed my weird bookmark problem...

OT but you're the only person I know who might have advice. I have a question about fabric care. :)

Sorry -- this is Semyaza in disguise.
