(actually, i wouldn't wish that on anyone, useful as it may be)
here are the "classics" i have on my shelf, aka the proud, the few books that i haven't sold back throughout my college education: - michel foucault--discipline & punish, the history of sexuality - simone de beauvoir--the second sex (haven't read it yet, but i've got both the french and english version just waiting for me) - anything by jeanette winterson, but sexing the cherry might be a good start - judith halberstam--in a queer time and place, female masculinity - kennedy & davis, boots of leather, slippers of gold - anything by toni morrison, maybe start with sula? - brown girl, brownstones by paule marshall - toni cade bambara--gorilla my love - nela larsen- quicksand, and passing - audre lorde - this bridge called my back
so basically this list is alot of white lesbian books vs. african american fiction.
i wasn't too impressed with the ortner article, but i can't remember why. i think it had something to do with her essentializing "women".
this was one of my favorite articles from a class i took on anthropology/development/gender:
Magdalena Villarreal, 1999, Wielding and Yielding : Power, Subordination and Gender Identity in the Context of a Mexican Development Project, PhD dissertation, Wageningen : Wageningen Agricultural University, pp. 1-9 (introduction), pp. 201-224 (chapter 7), pp. 262-269 (summary). or:
