So for Lent, I have chosen to give up... the internet!
But wait, that's impossible? Well kinda yeah, so I'm being a bit more targeted. I will not use port 80 (aka http). Email and IM are fine, as they are simply communicating with other people (and also, not on port 80). What I'm trying to give up is my information addiction. I can and do spend countless hours absorbed reading wikipedia, news, and blogs (not LJ type things, but ones like BadAstronomy, RealClimate, Deltoid, Krugman). It bothers me, a lot though, as I always feel like such time has been wasted. So I'm using the excuse of Lent to try to go on an information diet.
Now I'm going to make a small handful of exceptions:
1.) Work-related stuff (e.g. online journals and papers, institutional wiki writing)
2.) Weather (not weather news, just the forecasts)
3.) Online banking/bill pay
4.) Online shopping (for specific items, no browsing allowed)
5.) things related to certain career options (he says vaguely)
martiancyclist knows what this means.
I'm posting this on LJ and facebook so y'all can help keep me honest. Also so y'all understand why I don't comment on various things on either site for a while. I will still receive facebook messages, and can reply if it's something urgent. The going offs of the internet starts when I go to Ash Wednesday services at 7 tonight. I'll post again after easter with how it went.
