actually, everything smells like thai. I knew that would happen, i guess I just didn't realize how much.
So, tonight was my first night of work, as a waitress, at Chuy's Thai Restaurant. For those of you who haven't heard the story, Alyssa and I, on our very first day in Adelaide, needed dinner, and happened across the first thai restaurant on o'connell street, which just happened to be Chuy's (pronouced like chewy, great name). We got free wine, free entrees, and pretty cheap dinner, and after talking to him for a while he offered us jobs if we ever needed them. We basically hadn't really been in there much after that, except for me stopping by to talk to him occasionally, and deciding that yes, australia really is making me broke, so I should get a job, and that I should take him up on it. Getting a work visa was a pain in the ass, and of course I got it RIGHT before mid-semester break, so I couldn't go in and talk to him, so right after break I did... he thought I'd gone back to the US early or something because I hadn't come in for over 2 weeks.
Anyway, tonight was my first night of working at Chuy's thai, as a waitress, cleaner, and apprentice chef. When I came in, Ben, his nephew (white, threw me off as Chuy is very very not english, speaking or looking) had just seated a couple, and they were the only couple in the place, which is pretty common, as Chuy's is never very busy.. ha. So I talk to him a while, get the low down on what to do blahblahblah, actually really taught me what I needed to do, and told me that his friends, a group of 8 (and all gay I think, literally, not even just effeminate) were coming in, but it was the only reservation. Another couple came in, which I tended to, and apparently they knew Chuy so it was pretty easy, and they were cute and old, but then, as if this mass calling of dinner goers had been issued, 3 groups of 8 came in, of course. So first this girl's birthday group came in, but they had to wait for a while for the rest of their party, then my table came in, a group of seven which must have been like a prof and his 6 PhD students or something, cause he was very pompous, and the only guy in the group, and much older than all the girls with him.
They were seriously... not cool. I'm glad they were entertained with themselves, cause it meant I could leave them and not think they were waiting for me to come round, quite the opposite, they took forever to do anything, but finally they ordered about half the menu, and multiple bottles of wine. After getting the food out really slowly and intermitantly, cause we have 3 woks and 24 ppl to feed, they sat around for ages, then ordered champagne, took forever with that, then ordered coffee and tea, and we didn't even have ne milk. Ben's group of friends was awesome enough that they were waiting for him and he quietly asked them to run to the store for us (yes, that's how small a restaurant this is) so we could make them coffee, and after about 2.5 hours, they finally left.
The night really wasn't bad, but as a first time waitress, it was really overwhelming for a little while, with 3 tables out of the 6 occupied requiring over $200 meals, and thank god my group entertained themselves and weren't in a hurry or anything, cause wow, that took long enough. Anyway, I was slightly flustered by the time their food was all out to them,a nd I go in the back and Chuy tells me it must be my fault that its so busy cause I promised I would make ppl come, and it's never that busy on a wed. night, literally, as in there were 3 ppl there the night before and that was it. But it was sort of a nice refreshment to be laughing in the back with my boss, who seriously is a really great guy. Ben thought he was going to get out of work at 9pm, so did I, instead, I got home at 12:15. Then again, everyone finally left at 11:30, at which point chuy told me we were going to china town for dinner and iw as like hell no, it's pub night, I wanted to be home and drinking 2 hours ago. So instead he made us all dinner there while we were cleaning up, and I got to sit and drink and talk with him and the other chef, Somsa, and Ben for almost an hour.
Cause I had been running around for almost 4 hours, I didn't feel like eating, so the wine I had went straight to my head, and I ended up talking to Chuy and Somsa about the different parts of Tailand and the different foods/languages of the different parts, it was so cool, then had to persuade chuy that no, his nephew was not a bad waiter, but yes, I'd take over the restaurant for him when he needed to go on holiday. I got really lucky with work I think, although I may get a bit screwed over monitarily wise, I'm working for a small, strapped for business restaurant, but with a pretty damn good boss who gives me free food and drink whenever I come in, and will do the same for my friends. Hopefully tomorrow won't be quite as busy, cause I didn't get to go out tonight, and Lincoln's pub night is tomorrow, so I better be able to partake. Thank god he doesn't expect me to work on weekends, he's smarter than that, he knows I go out, and I explained to him what 40s were and how to play edward 40 hands, so uh, we're tight haha.
ok, i'm rambling, i'mr eally tired and a little tipsy. good night, yay thai.
