For all those that rejected my offer to come see BodyTorque.2 with me, really missed out on something....it was just incredible, absolutely amazing. They werent just performances but intense explorations of actual real things....gosh i it was an incredible evening....
It was a series of 5 different dance movements, Pas de deux, choreographed by new up and coming (and mainly young) choreographers, and performed, by equally new dancers from the Australian Ballet (School).
The First, Sunken Waltz was just beautiful. Indulgent in its lyrical nature, the dancers actually became the music, im serious. I could actually see the music being played out before me as the dancers danced. THe choreographer in the program says "Mostly, my pursuit was to make something beautiful" and oh how he did. the piece was just so romantic, full of life, and being a waltz it brought to mind scenes from a vienna waltz that i have never seen. The bodies gracefully moving to the music, being the music.
The second piece - Untitled Preludes was created from the inspiration gained from the Cello, predominantly Bach's Suites for Cello. Whilst i can appreciate it for being an incredible piece of art, i really didnt feel connected to it. THe choreographer wanted to interpret and visualise the different moods imagined by Bach as he wrote the music through the dancer- and i think he achieved this but for me it was too disjointed and jaggered, like a shattered piece of window pain with point and clear cut lines. I like dance to be more fluid and lyrical like the first piece and third as well...
A little Disconnected was also aesthetically beautiful and i felt really connected to it. The male also reminded me of Nacho, my dancer love from New York (gosh i miss him!). But this piece was beautiful. It was fluid and smooth, at points the dancers were one, and as i commented with Chloe, the girl i went to see this with, at times you forgot that there were 2 dancers up there, It was...i dont know, amazing, trully amazing.
But overrall the 4th piece was the most intense dancing i have seen in such a long time. It made us cry. On the Breath Mary, explored the characters of Jesus and Mary Magdalene through a dark and provocative movement. It was really emotionally draining but beautiful all the same. The characterisation along with the dark and strong music really succeed ins showing the character of Magdelene as being tarnished by the religious institutions that use her for their own means...
it was all so amazing. And the dancers themselves were so beautiful. The most unconventuon dancer would have been the jesus. He was very stocky and muscualar, as opposed to the slender and slim type of musculature of the other (and most) male dancers. Whilst there is always something a little feminine about the dancers, this guy was masculine through and through....
All this has really shown me how much i really miss dancing, and how much it still runs in my vains. it also took me back to New York, when for a brief moment in time and in my life i was a dancer...i actually was a dancer....
