“Come on, come on, come on!” Cade stomped on the clutch and twisted the key again, willing the engine to start. Apparently his powers of mind over matter were very limited, because the engine only ticked over a few times, sputtered and then died.

"Shit." Groaning, Cade gave up and slapped the steering wheel with the palm of his hand. “Stupid piece of junk metal!”

It was no real surprise that the car had died. It had been on its last legs when Cade had bought it, second hand, a year ago. It had been the only he’d been able to afford and having lived in New York meant that he hadn’t really needed it anyway. The only times he used it was for emergencies. Now, in New Jersey, he needed a car every day to get to work.

And now, it seemed, he didn’t have a car. It would be worthless to take the thing into the shop. Cade envisioned that the next - and last - trip his car would be taking would be to a scrap metal yard.

Grabbing his bag and anything else valuable from inside the car, Cade got out and looked over towards the bus stop. “The bus it is then,” Cade muttered unenthusiastically before he turned and locked the door - though he might as well have left it unlocked.

house, cade
