One day I'll have to go to Kaaawa and take pics there but that probably wont happen until I have visitors from the mainland. Isn't that how it always is?? Never get out enough until someone visits. I like the illusion everyone gets when they visit us because they think we have fun EVERY week and a party every weekend!

Oh, you should!! Across the street from the elementary school is a beautiful beach park...or at least, it was there years and years ago. Also, the beaches along that stretch of the Kamehameha Highway are gorgeous, very rocky, and they used to be pretty uninhabited. Of course, all that could have changed tremendously since I was there.

LOLOL...visitors do have that effect. :) I have friends who say to me "you live in California! It must be so great to go to the beach every day." I just shake my head; if I didn't have to go to work, it certainly would be! Life is just life anywhere, isn't it? Though it can be a lot more beautiful and enjoyable in some places than in others.

I wanted to ask, too, where that pagoda is. My memory of those days is fuzzy, but I think I've seen it. Is it anywhere near Ala Moana Center?

I love driving on that side of that island. I sent thefaeriegirl a dvd with some video clips I took last year. I don't remember if it was taken around Kaaawa but it was near there I'm sure. I know the school and the beach park you're talking about but the only time I stopped there was to fix the windshield wiper. I don't think it has changed much over there. When was the last time you've been here?

The pagoda is in Nuuanu like when you're heading into town from the Pali Lookout. There's this scenic lookout you can pull into so I'm sure there's like a million photos by other tourists that look exactly like mine. Basically it's closer to downtown than Ala Moana.

Ohhhhhhh...I'm confused, then. But I still like the pagoda! It's pretty. :)

I moved away from Hawaii when I was ten, so...twenty-two years. Holy crap. Anyway, I've always wanted to go back but haven't made it for various reasons. I always wonder if it still looks how I remember it. Probably not, although a friend of my mother's did recently tell her that out near Kaaawa, it pretty much looks exactly the same. I guess there's so little room between the coast and the mountains that they can't really build there. Thank DOG!

It's funny you mention the Pali lookout; that's a word I haven't heard in a long time. What I remember most about the Pali Highway is that when it rained, we'd take garbage bags and go mud sliding at various spots in the woods just off the road. Ohhhhh boy. That was so much fun!!

That side of the island does look pretty much the same as before. Most of my memories of there are from like twenty years ago when I first lived here since we'd go island driving more often.
Hey one thing I could never see was the crouching lion. My dad was always pointing at the rocks that formed the lion but I never could make it out. Did you ever see it??? Maybe I just need a better imagination?
I remember seeing kids go mud sliding before. Maybe that was you! Most of those areas are fenced off now though. Now what I really liked seeing after it rained were all the waterfalls.

Fenced off??? Blasphemy!!

Crouching Lion!! Oh the memories.... I made out the lion one time as a kid, but mostly, I'd just stare at it and think "huh? Lion?" We used to live right there, actually, in an apartment complex called Makua Village; it's now all condos, I think. I used to play on that mountain all the time. :) I got lost up there one time with two friends who were older than I was; we nearly got stuck up there after dark but managed to find our way out...though we ended up about two miles from where we'd started.

How long have you lived there? Are you in Honolulu primarily? My aunts both lived in Honolulu, so I'd spend a lot of time down there...hence, my intimate knowlege with Ala Moana Center. :P I was sad to hear that all the Liberty Houses are gone, though, bought out by Macys or something? I used to LOVE Liberty House; it was the quintessential old-time department store...fancy and a little bit of everything.
