I beat Orcs & Elves II last night, so now I feel I can give a complete review.
Basically, it doesn't stray too far from the setup provided by DoomRPG and Orcs & Elves and in fact makes a lot of nice additions that seem like a natural progression from the first games. For instance, the 3-D world you run around in now has an additional vertical level that's used mostly for decoration's sake, but makes for some nice scenery. There are now puzzles involving rocks and air jets that, while not too terribly "puzzle-y" makes for a nice addition to the combat. You get a white mouse "familiar" that you can control that can go through bars and small holes to add secret areas and in one part, solve a puzzle. There is a lockpicking minigame which isn't terribly difficult, but again, it breaks up the combat sequences nicely.
It's isn't all sunshine and daisies, however. The game is a straight linear affair, breaking away from the hub-style gameplay of the first two titles. The plot really weak for the most part, but to be honest I wasn't really expecting anything better. If anything, Orcs & Elves II shows that Fountainhead is moving forward with their engine and trying new things out.
Overall, I have to say that I hope that John Carmack keeps shoveling these things out. I predict that as long as the quality continues the way it's been going by Orcs & Elves V we'll have the perfect game. Cellphone or not.
