The one week game

Jan 05, 2007 09:26

Spurred on by this article I figured that actually coding a game right now would be a good idea, for a variety of reasons. Mainly that I'd be putting something out there that shows that I know this stuff, and because I need something to reassure myself that I do, indeed, know this stuff.

Some differences from Mr. Barson's endeavor and my own include the fact that I'm using a language that I know a bit about (J2ME, of course) and that I'll be using a half-finished (Shouldn't-even-be-called) design document that I wrote up a while ago. Also, since it seemed good enough for some of our outside developers that things only work on the emulator, I'm not going to bother with making sure it works on an actual phone in those 40 hours.

I've got the Java SDK and the J2ME wireless toolkit installed and made sure it all worked by coding up a quick "Hello World" program making sure the build process and everything worked in the emulator. I don't know if I'll actually spend 8 hours a day (unlikely) doing this, so the "one week game" may take more than a real world week, but we'll see how that goes. I'll post updates here on LJ on at least the amount of time I've taken up.

Wish me luck!

40hour
