Duchess shares a common touch

She ballooned to 220 pounds after too many five course royal banquets and felt miserable standing next to the svelte Princess Diana. So imagine what it did to her self-esteem when the British tabloids dubbed her "The Duchess of Pork."

The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, shared these weighty travails with about 60 members of the local Weight Watchers on Thursday.

Even after shedding more than 50 pounds on Weight Watchers in the past nine years, Weight Watchers spokeswoman "Fergie" told the nodding audience that she still had "the head of a fat person." While she is quite thin now, the strawberry-blonde former wife of Prince Andrew said she is afraid to look in the mirror.

"Just because I am a member of the royal family and have two princesses as daughters doesn't mean I don't have a weight issue," said Ferguson.

Though it was billed as a surprise visit, many in the crowd confided that they knew the duchess was stopping by. Several brought cameras and video recorders and shuffled to get a good seat before she appeared from the back of the meeting room.

New York Daily News sportswriter Dave Little, who said he was actually surprised by the royal guest, asked the duchess how she overcame her psychological dependency on food. The Carlstadt resident said he has dropped from 423 to 319 pounds in the past year, but was struggling to meet his goal of 250 pounds.

"If you think it's difficult, try to imagine what it felt like to walk side by side with my sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales," Ferguson said. "She was tall and beautiful, like a gazelle. I followed like an elephant."

Another member of the audience asked how the duchess could resist all the rich food she is offered at royal functions.

Ferguson said she struggles to remain disciplined. At a banquet at age 18, when her romance with Prince Andrew was beginning to bloom, she was told by another royal that it was "royal protocol to eat the chocolate eclairs" passed to her. She offended some when she turned them down, she said.

Since then, Ferguson has become an expert at "shuffling food around the plate," she said.

While no members of the local Weight Watchers have felt the pressure of worldwide fame - more than 1 billion people watched Ferguson's wedding on television - many said they could relate to the duchess.

Vicki Jay O'Grady-Longo, a small business owner from Nutley, said she was moved to tears by the duchess's battle with weight loss. In her 19 months on Weight Watchers, O'Grady-Longo has struggled to lose 14 pounds.

"Even to a duchess, the desire to eat is very real and she very completely and vulnerably expressed this to us," she said.

After her speech, Ferguson explained why so many people connect to her message.

"If you've got a weight issue, and are a regular human being who speaks from the heart, it doesn't matter who you are," she said. "I feel as though I'm approachable because I don't try and be anything I'm not."
