What I'm reading...

I'm currently reading two books at once. I'm reading The Chinese in America by the late Iris Chang and Inside the Victorian Home by Judith Flanders. One book details the horrible treatment of Chinese immigrants by white Americans. These immigrants were the people who helped build the Transcontinental Railroad and build-up the state of California by draining marshlands and participating in agriculture. They received a pitiful payments, lived in horrid conditions, were terrorized, brutalized, and sometimes killed.  This wasn't just in the 1800's either, but continued well into the 20th century.

I haven't read much of Inside the Victorian Home yet, but I already knew that I wouldn't want to be a Victorian woman with a restrictive corset and no voting rights. I'd also hate to have to defer to men for everything.  I'm not fond of cleaning, but I'd probably die from inhaling dust and soot if I didn't clean my house in Victorian England.
