The Couch

The other day I was with some folks and on a never-ending an ultimately unfulfilled quest for sushi (ignore the "never-ending" and "ultimately" contradiction), someone thought it'd be a good idea to duck into the Salvation Army. Not because it was thought to have sushi. I don't think.

I've been casually in the market for furniture lately, and just recently picked up some swivel chairs and a rug. A couch caught my eye, so I sat on it. $299 the tag said. Then it said marked down to $99. I was just casually enjoying it, not thinking too seriously about it, when I was accosted by a... sales rep? Floor person? Whomever he was, his motivation was less "commission" and more "get this crap out of here to make room for more crap".

Anyway, I was enjoying how unusually comfortable it was, appreciating that it was extra-long (for both extra-long napping and crowing people in), and noting that it was surprisingly both sturdy and light. The dude asked if I was interested, and I mentioned how I was sort of in the market, but not looking to buy today. Almost instantly he cut the price down to $75, then reminded me it was a half-off sale, so my price was $37.50. Thirty-seven fifty for a big comfy couch in good condition! Ah, but I had no way to transport it. No problem, the guy said, and he hooked me up with a friend of his with a truck.

The tough sell worked on me, as I'm incredibly easy to convince to do something that I want to do anyway, so I bought it. A member of our party was gracious enough to offer the use of her truck, which was conveniently parked a block away. I owe her several shots of whiskey.

Now I have a new (to me) couch, on which I am sitting composing this entry. I'm thinking of calling it "Victor".
