Since everybody keeps accusing me of being "ambiguous" or "cryptic' (psh, whatever that means) I guess I'll clarify my previous post. Crystal and I did indeed get married on New Year's Eve- actually I guess it was New Year's Day, since it was after midnight- and it was in fact an elopement, since neither of our parents were aware of our plans. It was a far better ceremony than I think we could have hoped for, despite it being somewhat awkward at times (what with no one there having ever done such a thing before). It was outdoors at Mammoth Cave National Park, a little bit after midnight central time, with an almost full moon providing natural light and flashlights filling in the gaps when we needed to read something. I surprised (or at least attempted to surprise) Crystal by setting up lights in an altar sort of thing before she got there. The only people there were my sister, her sister, our friend Veronica and her boyfriend Dan, and of course Maggie, doing her best as doggie ring bearer and commentator. I think she was really confused about why exactly we were out in the middle of the cold woods in the middle of the night when we really should have fed her and gone to bed long ago and why couldn't she go swimming, dammit? Veronica performed our very multi-cultural ceremony, complete with Humanist vows, a Hindu blessing, Irish and English traditional blessings, and an Apache prayer, all wrapped around a Celtic/pagan handfasting (where you bind the bride and groom's hands together). We still aren't sure how the pictures are going to turn out- they could either be beautiful or just a series of dark and/or blurry shots where you can sort of make out what's happening if you squint just right. We'll see.
The honeymoon was also very much us. We spent most of it in Louisville, since we had to take Katie to the airport ridiculously early (the least we could do, since she not only left a boy in Denver to fly out for just the night, she also lied to my mom to cover for us). Aside from taking almost an hour driving around downtown trying to find our hotel and a brief excursion into Indiana (thrilling placed that it is) we spent much of the day at the Louisville Science Center, which is I know where every honeymooning couple wishes they could go. Actually, we had a lot of fun indulging our nerdy sides and playing with all of the cool exhibits and such. After that we went to our hotel, which was I think the first 4 star hotel I've ever stayed in. And it definitely deserved those stars- hell, the pillow-topped bed with down comforter and pillows alone deserved 4 stars. As for how we spent the rest of our time, I don't think I have to spell that out- suffice it to say we had a very, very good time. Of course, after all was said and done, we both had to go back to work today and return to the real world- but even that has had some bright spots, such as the fact that we'll have to pay less in taxes as a married couple. So there you go. That's how I spent my New Year's Eve.
