SEATTLE - Seattle Police have shot an armed man in the lobby of the new Federal Courthouse in downtown Seattle. The suspect was seen entering the courthouse shortly before noon, carrying a backpack, raising suspicions by the police and courthouse guards.
Police with guns drawn surrounded the Courthouse and were telling bystanders to get out of the line of fire.
They have also blocked off 8th and 9th Streets from Virginia to Stewart while the drama is unfolding.
At one point, initial reports indicated the man was believed to be carrying a hand grenade but that was not confirmed.
A receptionist in the U.S. Attorneys Office says the Federal Courthouse is in lockdown and police evacuated the building from about the 6th floor on down. Reports indicate some 50 to 100 people were evacuated.
