We have been talking about potentially moving to a slightly-nicer apartment.

The upside is a modest quality of life increase.  We'd get a washer and dryer, which seems like a minor thing until you don't have one.  This is, admittedly, a huge motivater.  We'd also get a lot of other little perks like garaged parking, a fireplace, slightly larger apartment, a small storage area, walk-in closets, etc.  They're all little things, but since we don't move often, they would be little things we'd have to enjoy for a long time.

Obviously the downside is that moving is not only a pain, but expensive.  Nevermind the couple thousand dollars in moving fees and deposits, but our rent would go up a few hundred dollars, too, because (a) nicer apartment and (b) we'd lose our loyalty rent reduction.

Higher rent and big deposits means less into savings towards a house, and a longer time spent renting.  Not like we are able to save much now with California rent costs, but that's still less we could put towards a house.

At the same time, it's not like a house is right around the corner.  If we were just a year or two away from having a down payment, then it would be no contest to stay-put and save like crazy.  But it will be a decade or more, if ever, so it seems like maybe we ough to rent an apartment we feel like we could stay in for a long time.

We have a couple months before we have to sign our lease but it's something we're thinking about.
