I don't like particular genres, I have discovered. While I can tell you that I do not like certain genres/styles [mostly country and rap], there's a certain thing I have to have in a band before I am completely satisfied with them as an artist.
I don't like bands that don't have songs that continue after the song is over. To explain: I like songs that have stories lurking behind the thin veils of their lyrics. Not necessarily stories behind the writing of the songs, but stories behind the songs.
Nowadays, it seems [to me, at least] the songs are very straightforward. There's no motivation for me to want to know what the point is, because they make it obvious. But my favorite rock bands...there's something in the songs that just begs for a story to be written about it.
Genesis wins in this catagory. They have a full album just begging - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - and "A Trick Of the Tale," as well, but specifically this song...
Watcher of the skies watcher of all
His is world alone no world is his own,
He whom life can no longer surprise,
Raising his eyes beholds a planet unknown.
Creatures shaped this planet's soil,
Now their reign has come to an end,
Has life again destroyed life,
Do they play elsewhere, or do the know
more than their childhood games ?
Maybe the lizard's shed it's tail,
This is the end of man's union with Earth.
Judge not this race by empty remains
Do you judge God by his creatures when they are dead.
For now the lizard's shed it's tail
This is the end of man's union with Earth.
From life alone to life as one,
Think not your journey done
For though your ship be sturdy, no
Mercy has the sea,
Will you survive on the ocean of being,
Come ancient children hear what I say
This is my parting council for you on your way.
Sadly now your thoughts turn to the stars
Where we have gone you know you never can go.
Watcher of the skies watcher of all
This is your fate alone, this fate is your own.
That song...it could be very versitile. You could write a story about space, about the past, about almost anything, using that song as the frame.
Pink Floyd, also, although those stories do not lend themselves to my particular forte. I do not do dark and angsty well. this song, specifically, facinates me:
The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
Got to keep the loonies on the path.
The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more.
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forbodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.
The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me 'till I'm sane.
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.
The Monkees...the early Monkees didn't have many, but as time went on and they started getting the weirder songs instead of the entirely pop-ish songs, they began to get more and more interesting. I am currently in love with certain songs, this one in particular...I know they didn't write it themselves, but still. ;P
Porpoise Song
My, my the clock in the sky is pounding away
There's so much to say
A face, a voice, an overdub has no choice
And it cannot rejoice
Wanting to be, to hear and to see
Crying to the sky
But the porpoise is laughing good-bye, good-bye
good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Clicks, clacks
Riding the backs of giraffes for laughs is alright for a while
The ego sings of castles and kings and things
That go with a life of style
Wanting to feel, to know what is real
Living is a lie
But the porpoise is waiting good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye.
The Beatles, oddly enough, only have two songs that make me sit there and try to think up why the person singing is singing what he is. I don't know why that is, whether it's because they bounce from basic and horribly easy to understand to bizarre beyond belief quite easily, but this is the main song that makes me go "Hmmm..."
Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Then we have The Who. The Who are the second worst, right after Genesis. So far I have had story ideas pop up from "905," "Armenia," "Dogs," "Doctor, Doctor," "Faith in Something Bigger," "I Can't Reach You," "Heaven and Hell," "The Quiet One," and "Tattoo," and that's not including all the havoc John is wreaking on my creative tendencies through his solo work...but currently, the two songs tugging at me are....
The Red Chins in their millions
Will overspill their borders
And chaos then will reign in our Rael
Rael, the home of my religion
To me the center of the Earth
The Red Chins in their millions
Will overspill their borders
And chaos then will reign in our Rael
My heritage is threatened
My roots are torn and cornered
And so to do my best I'll homeward sail
And so to do my best I'll homeward sail
Now Captain, listen to my instructions
Return to this spot on Christmas Day
Look toward the shore for my signal
And then you'll know if in Rael I'll stay
If a yellow flag is fluttering
Sickly herald against the morn
Then you'll know my courage has ended
And you'll send your boat ashore
But if a red flag is flying
Brazen bold against the blue
Then you'll know that I am staying
And my yacht belongs to you
Now Captain, listen to my instructions
Return to this spot on Christmas Day
Look toward the shore for my signal
And then you'll know if in Rael I'll stay
He's crazy if he thinks we're coming back again
He's crazy if he thinks we're coming back again
He's crazy if he thinks we're coming back again
He's crazy, anyway
If a yellow flag is fluttering
Sickly herald against the morn
Then you'll know my courage has ended
And you'll send your boat ashore
And the one that is currently doing THE MOST DAMAGE EVER...
Now I'm asleep what shall I dream of tonight
Now I'm asleep what shall I dream of tonight
Will it be girls or will it be money
Will it be sad or will it be funny
Will it be raining or will it be sunny
Tonight, tonight.
Please wake me up
I'm having a nightmare
Please somebody wake me up
I'm having a nightmare
And it doesn't feel like it's ever gonna stop
It doesn't feel like it's ever gonna stop
Please wake me up
I'm having a nightmare.
Please wake me up
I'm having a nightmare
Please somebody wake me up
I'm having a nightmare
And it doesn't feel like it's ever gonna stop
It doesn't feel like it's ever gonna stop
Please wake me up
I'm having a nightmare
Please somebody wake me up
I'm having a nightmare
And it doesn't feel like it's ever gonna stop
It doesn't feel like it's ever gonna stop [X 9 million]
So please tell me...am I insane???
Also, if you've friended me recently, is it rude to ask why? I just like to know why people find me interesting because I'm an egotist like that so I can try and stay interesting. ^__^ If it's for the rambling and random talkingness, I'll friend you back. If it's for the icons and pictures...eh. I'll most likely not, simply because I'm mean like that my friend's page is getting wonky already...
