She keeps a tidy house. Well she pays people to keep a tidy house for her while she sits curled on the couch with Bpo Bpo. She takes advantage of this free time to plan her escape. In her head she sounds out English words, practicing stringing them into sentences.

Later Jin will come home (much, much later) and crawl into bed beside her, let his lips brush against her temple. She’ll pretend she’s asleep.

In her head she sounds out the word, Good-bye.

*

There’s an album in her closet filled with photos and at least a dozen dried flowers pressed between the pages. There was a time when she would take it down almost daily, flip through the memories and smile to herself. She remembers loving Jin. She remembers shivering when they’re fingers brushed, giggling the first time he kissed her lips. He used to bring her a flower, one, single perfect flower, every day and tuck it behind her ear.

He buys her bouquets now, sends them with cards without messages. She lets them wilt, doesn’t bother putting them in a vase.

She used to think they were falling apart.

But now she knows they have already fallen. It’s a thing that has happened, not something that might still be avoided. She wants to blame him, to tell him he’s not the man she married, but she’s not the woman he married either.

She sleeps with Jae Lee between expensive, silk sheets and wonders why she doesn’t regret it more.

Before they make it to the airport, she’s certain she doesn’t love Jin anymore. Whatever they had has faded away into nothing but fear and anger. She wants to get away. To say Good-bye in a language he won’t understand.

She imagines walking away from him knowing she’ll never see him again and tells herself it will be easy.

But when the moment comes she freezes.

She can see the pictures in her head; remember every kiss and touch and conversation whispered in the dark. She looks back and he’s holding a flower, just one, perfect, white flower.

And then she knows she won’t leave him.

Sun returns to his side, takes the flower from his hand.

“Are you alright?” he asks.

His voice is soft, concerned. She nods, tells him his gift is too beautiful.

Nothing is alright; nothing has been changed or fixed. But she can’t let him go. Not yet.

She thinks she’s become too good of a liar.

She’s even starting to believe herself.
