It doesn’t fade.
The urge to hide, to run, to fight---she keeps a gun in her closet, bullets on the top shelf far from tiny hands.
She’ll never be free.
She’s not the only one.
He comes and goes; slinks into her room in the middle of the night, the stench of whiskey on his breath, never asks before he crawls into her bed.
They fuck too roughly, each trying to leave a mark, proof that they’re still alive (proof that they’re moving on.)
He leaves before the sun comes up:
See ya around, Mamacita.
She watches him go, always wishes she was the one walking away.
